I knew, before I read this, that Jim was gonna be bent out of shape. Cos’ he was gonna be blaming himself for Tony’s death, for being such a killjoy that Tony didn’t want to be sitting in the “hum-drum vee” with him. Party pooper, stick in the mud, the list goes on.
I was so happy while I was reading this that I sobbed and cried.
I’m not sure if they stayed at his or her home, I thought it was Jim’s crib, but I’m not entirely certain. I'm confused more than ever, after you mentioned Pepper’s neighbours.
Some of the scenes…The domestic intimacy of them, struck me. Particularly, after they had settled in better, and known each other more. Anyone who comes in unexpectedly would think that she and Jim had been taking meals like that for years, like a married couple, especially if they didn’t speak to each other. And they weren’t even a couple then, to begin with! =D
"Don't you know the Air Force started genetically altering all of its fighter pilots with kitty DNA? Old Gulf War trade secret, there," he jokes, returning to his book. "I can claw like a motherfucker and I always land on my feet. Just your average, run-of-the-mill superhero, that's me."
"So, kitty-man, do your foes often lure you into their sinister traps with catnip?" she asks...
Hm... *cocks head, ponders* That's kinda lame, Rhodey...But strangely adorable.
He kisses her one day, after a jog that leaves them panting and screaming and pushing hard enough to snap. The minute he gets her inside the front door, he just turns her around, framing his hands into the sides of her face, and presses their lips together.
It must have put a different kind of pressure on him, having Pepper thisclose. The initial sexual attraction, the fact that she was growing on him, too, smelling her perfume every time he stepped into a room…Seeing her smile again. Jesus, they share a bed at night.
His control was bound to snap, it was just a matter of time. Me: “God, finally.”
Yikes! You should have ‘singe’ warnings all over this fanfic, dude. Teh smut’s hawt! =D
happily still competitive
What does *points* that mean? *taps chin*
the support he offers when she can't decide if she wants to cling or pull away
I think that’s what she had been offering him in the car...when their friendship/relationship was still in its embryonic stage. You’re coming full circle with this line. Wow =)
she wonders dreadfully if the only way this could work is in a world where Tony Stark's ubiquity no longer exists
Um. Said you’d be writing a sequel. . . I want to echo what the other commenters have also said, and see how Tony reacts to Jim and Pepper being romantically involved.
Please? *drops to her knees*
I’ve been meaning to ask you: Why “The Constant Road Across the Wilderness”? Why that for a title?
P.S.: Jim and Pepper are Tony’s ‘parents’? *roars with laughter* So true.
